About the Role

The Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) is a crucial part of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS), responsible for promoting transparency and accountability in South Africa’s correctional facilities.
ICCVs act as the voice of inmates by ensuring that their rights are upheld and that the conditions of incarceration comply with the standards set out by the Department of Correctional Services.


Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will:

  • Visit correctional centres daily and engage with inmates and DCS officials to address complaints.

  • Monitor conditions of incarceration and report on any irregularities or violations.

  • Record and report on incidents involving deaths, segregation, use of restraints, or use of force.

  • Assist JICS officials during inspections and investigations.

  • Handle administrative tasks such as recording inmate complaints, compiling reports, and maintaining accurate documentation.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Education: Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (Matric).

  • Computer literacy and strong attention to detail.

  • A community organization nomination or recommendation (not older than six months) confirming endorsement as an ICCV.

  • Must demonstrate integrity, independence, and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Sound knowledge of Batho Pele principles.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.

  • A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.

  • Preference will be given to applicants residing near the correctional centres where positions are available.
